The other day I was looking at an old picture and noticed that all my friends and myself had “red eyes”. I was quite bewildered by this phenomenon, so I just had to figure out exactly what it was. You see, what happens is, when the flash goes off and the picture takes, you’re actually capturing the reflection of your retina. This same thing even happens to many animals such as cats, dogs, and even deer. However these animals also have another thing in common (Yes, I realize they have many things in common, they’re mammals, four legs, but this is even cooler!!), their retinas are covered by the Tapetum Lucidum, it functions as a little mirror in the back of their eyes. This is what makes they’re eyes glow with a flashlight!

Humans, on the other hand, do not have this Tapetum Lucidum, that is why we only get red eye during a flash picture. The flash is just that ‘dang bright! If you wish to reduce the amount of red eye in your pictures, most of camera’s now day have a red eye reducer. If you can detach the flash and hold it a few feet away, this can also help reduce red eye, or you just don’t you flash at all. And from what I understand, there aren’t very many light bulbs that can have this effect either, or, just to be safe, just don’t look directly into them!!
